A cancer diagnosis can bring significant physical, emotional, social and financial challenges for both patients and their families. For those affected by Head & Neck Cancer, these challenges can be particularly complex, making access to specialised support essential.
Despite these needs, Head & Neck Cancer remains less represented in Western Australia compared to many other cancer types, with fewer dedicated support services available. The Western Australian Head & Neck Cancer Support Group is helping to change this by providing a welcoming space where patients, carers and families can connect, share experiences and support one another.
Based in Murdoch, Perth, and facilitated by Head & Neck Cancer patients for Head & Neck Cancer patients and carers, the group is supported by the Western Australian Head & Neck Cancer Support Foundation to ensure members receive the understanding, connection and support they need throughout their cancer journey.
The Emotional Benefits of Community Support
Cancer can be an isolating experience, with many patients facing uncertainty, anxiety and emotional challenges throughout their journey. Support groups help by connecting people with others who understand what they are going through.
At the Western Australian Head & Neck Cancer Support Group, members can share experiences, challenges and achievements in a supportive environment. While every journey is different, the shared experience of living with Head & Neck Cancer provides reassurance, encouragement and a sense of community, helping patients feel less alone and more confident in their recovery.
Practical Support Through Shared Experiences
Beyond emotional support, support groups provide practical guidance on managing treatment side effects, adjusting to lifestyle changes and accessing available services.
The Western Australian Head & Neck Cancer Support Group also welcomes healthcare professionals to share insights on treatment, recovery and ongoing care. This collaborative approach encourages open communication and ensures patients and carers have access to valuable information and support.
Supporting Families and Carers
A Head & Neck Cancer diagnosis impacts not only patients but also their partners, carers and families. The Western Australian Head & Neck Cancer Support Group welcomes carers and family members to attend meetings, ask questions, share experiences and gain support.
By providing a relaxed and understanding environment, the group helps strengthen support networks and ensures carers feel supported throughout the cancer journey.
Monthly Meetings Open to All
The Western Australian Head & Neck Cancer Support Group currently meets once each month and welcomes patients, carers, family members, members of the public, medical practitioners and allied health workers.
The group’s objectives are to:
- Empower cancer survivors to live well
- Support people affected by cancer, including patients and carers
- Integrate palliative care services where appropriate
Meetings provide a valuable opportunity for attendees to share experiences, learn from others and build meaningful connections within the Head & Neck Cancer community.
